This summer I chose not to sign the kiddos up for camps. I wasn't sure what was in store for my sanity! We were practically out of the house every day even in the sweltering Texas heat. Some days were easygoing, while others were....well, we won't discuss those. The list below is what helped maintain a sane and happy momME for summer 2010. Now, let's bring on the regular school routine because that makes this mom super happy!
1. A plan
2. Memberships to museums, zoo, etc.
3. Housekeeper
4. Parks
5. Sam's
6. Free kids meals
7. Library
8. Rec centers to swim
9. TV...yep, I said it...TV!
10. Grocery store
1. To plan, I started a spreadsheet of activities in April while I could still think.
2. Groupon, FB and other sites, occasionally offer half-priced memberships for the year.
3. I have officially decided that the months of May-July (maybe August) requires help. They say it takes a village, well a housekeeper is part of my village in the summer. Hiring help was actually cheaper than a few weeks of camp.
4. Parks are free, picnic lunches are cheap and the kids can burn off energy!
5. Sam's offers so much to look at and my kids like the samples. And, let's not forget about the combo meals. The three of us can eat there for less than $5.00. It's not the most healthy lunch, but once in awhile won't hurt.
6. Google free kids meal days in your area and eat on those days for lunch and/or dinner.
7. Many libraries offer summer programs and activities for FREE!
8. The costs at recreation centers are really inexpensive and the kids have a great time. Great for playdates!
9. The household laundry and administrative stuff has to get done somehow. And, I don't think once a week vegging out on TV will require future therapy. If this just doesn't doesn't feel right, have them also write about the shows they watched. This will give you even more time while they practice handwriting skills. You would be surprised at what they can recall.
10. Someone has to shop for groceries and I had to tote them with me. So, I created a grocery list just for them. It's educational and keeps them busy. Some bakeries offer a FREE cookie which is a nice treat after hard work and good behavior!

Whew. We ended up doing summer with just one summer camp because the other one canceled. I am a bit ready for a day off...how did you fare?
ReplyDeleteWhen I absolutely HAD to take the kids shopping with me, they'd LIVE for the free cookies at the bakery at our grocery store (and the free slice of cheese or salami at the deli!). It's a good incentive to behave!
