Thirsty Thursday - Thibodeaux Hot Toddy Recipe

I am a south Louisiana native (currently residing in TX). Yeah, cher...the bayou/cajun/creole country where I grew up on crawfish, jambalaya, and gumbo. So, the featured drink this Thursday is the Hot Toddy. Where I'm from, it is believed that the toddy helps cure the cold and flu. I'm sure the medical professionals would disagree, but I dare you to argue with a Louisiana grandma. Some say there is an ongoing battle between who invented the drink, the Scottish or Irish. We will probably never know, but ask anyone from Louisiana and they'll swear it's their grandma's invention. The recipe varies by family, but here is the Thibodeaux Toddy Recipe. Yes, that is a name within my family. It's actually my mother's maiden name and my grandma's recipe. (You're probably giggling about the infamous Thibodeaux/Boudreaux jokes). To my knowledge we are not related to the Boudreaux's, but you never know!

  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • 2 ounces boiling water
  • 1 1/2 ounces whiskey
  • 1 tablespoon of lemon juice
  • 1 slice lemon
  • 1 peppermint
  • a bit of sugar

Add lemon juice, honey, boiling water, and whiskey into a mug. Place a slice of lemon and the peppermint in the mug. Let the mixture stand for 5 minutes. Add sugar. Stir, sip and enjoy!
Ca c'est bon!

  1. I've never had it with a peppermint, but will try that addition the next time I make one of these. They definitely do help when you're feeling all stuffed up and congested! Sometimes the old school remedies work!!!
